Workers Uniting, representing two million workers in Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States, stands in solidarity with Brazil's former President, Lula da Silva, and its current President, Dilma Roussef, who are under massive attack by organized right-wing forces.

The governments of Lula and Dilma represent a triumph of democracy and social inclusion against the anti-democratic neo-liberal policies of the right. The government of Lula, a trade unionist and leader of the CUT metalworkers' union, increased real wages more than 53%, created 15 million new formal sector jobs, and lifted 40 million people out of poverty.

Much remains to be done to overcome the scourge of inequality and poverty in Brazil.  But these evils can only be overcome democratically, through legitimately elected governments. Corruption is also a threat to democracy - but corruption can only fought by upholding the rule of law, not by undermining it with threats to overthrow democratic governments.

We call on our governments to publicly condemn the right-wing attacks on Brazilian democracy and to make it clear that these attacks pose a threat to Brazil's global economic and political leadership.

Workers Uniting joins with the International Trade Union Confederation, the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas and Global Unions who have spoken out in solidarity with Lula and Dilma.  We stand with Brazil's democratically elected government.

LULA IS WORTH THE FIGHT
